CHANEL’S BOUCLÉ JACKET: THE ICONIC PIECE YOU SHOULD INVEST IN
1/17/2016
In the words of Karl Lagerfeld “Some things never go out of fashion in the world of fashion: jeans, the
white shirt, and the Chanel jacket."
The Chanel bouclé jacket is a classic that remains a success to this
day. Its impeccable construction and versatility have made it a timeless piece,
worn by names from Grace Kelly to Cameron Diaz.
Born in a time when women were confined to impractical clothes, the
little jacket came to break all the rules. “Fashion has become a joke…the
designers have forgotten that there are women inside the dresses,” Coco Chanel
famously said. “Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must
also be able to move, to get into a car without bursting their seams! Clothes
must have a natural shape.”
Indeed, Coco was so tired of the constricting clothes designed for women
that in 1954 she decided to revive the successful cardigan suit she had created
30 years before with a new fabric brought from Scotland – the tweed – that
buckled (bouclé) became the basis of her jacket. The design was minimalist,
practical and allowed movement. Paired
with a knee-length wrap-around skirt, it was a success. Women were surrendered
by the new found freedom and comfort of the clothes. It was even sported by names like Brigitte
Bardot, Grace Kelly and Romy Schneider.
In fact, although the jacket has been reinvented trough the years its
original shape and construction keep the same. “As the years pass, I expect the
jacket will change. Colors will come and go; it will see new designers and
adornments,” Karl Lagerfeld has said. “But in a way, I'm confident it will
remain the same: dynamic yet classic, simple yet elaborate. But never
outdated.”

Whether worn with jeans and t-shirt or over a sophisticated dress, the
iconic topper never ceases to charm. Famous faces like Lilly Collins, who likes
to wear it with flare pants, or Miranda Kerr, whose favorite look is over a
spring dress, have all proved the jacket’s worth as an investment (around 2.000£).
"The interesting thing is that one simple thing, a little jacket with four pockets, you can play so much and create 120 different types," Lagerfeld said. "It's play time with an item that is timeless.”
